Doctors have stated that a feeling of tenderness around the vaccinated area on your arm is part of the course, but swelling could indicate you’ve had an allergic reaction. Feeling tender near the injection will be normal after the vaccine, but a swollen arm is quite unusual. Any redness or swelling should stop within 24 hours and for those who have swollen arms, that is probably an allergic reaction. If you are worried about swelling, we recommend speaking to Broadgate GP.
If the swelling or redness doesn’t calm down after a day, then it could be an infection, in these cases we recommend seeking medical advice. It could be much more severe after the second vaccine, this is because the immune system has been primed so it will recall the reaction and often make it worse.
Why does the swelling happen in the first place? Well the reason a swollen arm may happen is because the vaccine is a foreign substance in the body and this is what causes an allergic reaction. Lots of cells will release histamine and other chemicals which go into the bloodstream and will cause a reaction.

When it comes to treating these issues, we advise taking an antihistamine, this can provide relief. It’s important to remember that treatments won’t usually be required, but an antihistamine medicine could be useful, should the reaction spread to other parts of the body, then steroid medication, usually by injection, may be needed however this is very rare.
Swollen Lymph Nodes
Another prevalent side effect that vaccinators have experienced is ‘lymphadenopathy’, this is more commonly known as swollen lymph nodes, trials show that this side effect was found in 11% of people who had the Moderna vaccine as well as 16% after the second dose of the vaccination. Currently in the UK it’s the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccination that are used, should you notice any lymphadenopathy, try not to worry, if you have been vaccinated, it’s a known side effect. We advise monitoring your body for a couple of weeks and making sure that you don’t notice any other changes that could be in line with cancer.
Lymphadenopathy in the underarms or the neck area on the same side as your COVID-19 vaccine is usually a normal reaction of the body after the injection. This happens because your lymph nodes are trying to fight off potential infection, the element that your body has been exposed to as a result of the vaccine. Some people may feel the swollen nodes but others may not, it may just be detected when people have their mammogram screening.
