Ear Wax Removal Clinic London

From time to time, wax buildup can block the ear canal, leading to reduced hearing and discomfort. To clear the blockage and improve your symptoms, Broadgate GP offers a same-day ear wax removal service where we use warm water to painlessly flush out excessive, stubborn or impacted ear wax.

The only thing you should be aware of is that if the wax in your ear has become compacted, you may need to apply ear drops (warm olive oil works best) for 2/3 days to soften up the ear wax prior to the ear wax removal procedure.

Feel free to visit our clinic as a walk-in patient or by appointment. Call us today on 020 7638 4330 to book an appointment or fill in our online form, and one of the team will get back to you.

Ear Syringing Clinic London

At Broadgate GP, we offer in-clinic effective earwax removal using modern ear irrigation systems with jet tips, replacing old-style metal syringes. We also provide video consultations for initial advice, assessment of symptoms and guidance on whether in-clinic treatment is required for your ear wax issue.

Our pumps have variable, regulated pressure, but the process is essentially the same for every appointment. A body temperature water jet flows through the pump in an upward motion into the ear, and a low-pressure suction gently draws out the softened ear wax easily.

What Is Ear Wax?

Ear wax is a natural substance that your body produces in order to lubricate and protect the lining of the ear. Its job is to catch any dirt and dust particles and to repel water. Different people have different body systems, and the amount of ear wax they produce varies from person to person.

Should I Use Cotton Buds Or Ear Plugs?

Some people may go through life without ever needing their ears professionally cleaned, whereas others may need their ears irrigated several times throughout their lives.

For those whose ears produce more wax than others, they should be careful when using cotton buds and earplugs, as this can compact any excess wax in the ear, making removal slightly more difficult and necessitating the use of ear drops or oil to loosen the compacted wax before syringing.

We would suggest alternative ear-cleaning options, such as professional ear wax removal. To book your ear-cleaning appointment, please contact our ear wax removal clinic at Broadgate GP.

Common Ear Problems

Many people experience ear problems at some point in their lives, such as ear wax build-up, ear infections, and hearing loss. Ear wax build-up can lead to blocked ears, temporary hearing loss, and discomfort, while ear infections may cause pain, fever, and discharge.

Excessive earwax and untreated infections can also contribute to more persistent hearing loss. At our ear wax removal clinic, we offer a comprehensive range of services including micro-suction ear wax removal, gentle ear cleaning, and thorough hearing assessments, so we can diagnose and treat these issues effectively. Our goal is to help you resolve ear wax blockages, manage temporary hearing loss, and maintain healthy ears with safe, effective wax-removal techniques.

Why Do I Need Ear Syringing?

An ear wax buildup is likely to be caused by the wax being pushed into the ear canal during cleaning with cotton buds. Although hearing loss is recognised, other symptoms include coughing, itching, ringing, and sometimes pain.

Ear syringing involves using a flow of low-pressure water via a specialised ear irrigator to remove the earwax blockage harmlessly. Our procedure is quick and painless, simply book in online for a 15-minute ear health consultation, mentioning the earwax removal procedure in the Notes section when booking.

Causes of Ear Wax Build Up

A very common problem at any age, earwax build-up often has simple causes. Attempting to clean wax from the outer ear canal with cotton swabs or other objects can push the wax deeper into the ear, which in turn can cause blockages.

The use of devices such as earplugs, earphones, and even hearing aids can also increase the likelihood of ear wax build-up. However, some people naturally produce more earwax than others, making them more likely to experience excess earwax and blockages.

The signs of a blockage in the ear include:

As clinical practitioners, we can carry out a hearing test to determine if there is anything wrong with your ear drums and if there is a high build-up of wax present, and advise on the best treatment options available, such as a microsuction procedure, to clear the ear completely of wax and ensure that it is removed safely.

Prevention and Maintenance

Maintaining healthy ears and preventing problems starts with regular ear care and smart habits. Gentle ear cleaning, the use of ear drops or olive oil drops to soften ear wax, and avoiding cotton buds or other objects that can push wax deeper into the ear canal are all important steps. Wearing earplugs in noisy or dusty environments can also help protect your ears and reduce the risk of ear infections. Our ear care specialists are here to provide personalised advice on the best ways to care for your ears, including safe cleaning routines and preventive measures. With the right approach, you can keep your ears clear, avoid unnecessary discomfort, and support long-term ear health.

How to Remove Earwax

Traditionally, medical professionals would use methods such as irrigation, ear syringing, or candling to remove an earwax build-up. If you’re looking for an ear cleaning or ear wax removal service in the London area, then be sure to call on Broadgate GP to book ear wax removal appointments. Upon doing so, we will be happy to talk through our earwax removal and ear syringing procedure, as well as the aftercare for your ear drum.

If stubborn wax cannot be fully removed during the first session, a follow-up appointment may be scheduled to ensure complete ear cleaning. Customers frequently express satisfaction with the follow-up care provided after ear wax removal procedures.

Manual Removal

This method of ear wax removal uses tiny specialist tools to gently tease the wax out of the ear.

This is usually used for minor cases with soft wax. For cases of impacted or hard wax, the wax needs to be softened over a few days with drops beforehand.

Ear Irrigation Machines

Instead of the old fashioned, outdated ear syringing techniques, we now use specialised systems to remove excess ear was – systems like the water-assisted ProPulse system. These systems deliver water at the right pressure, therefore, reducing the risk of perforating the eardrum or causing other ear damage. The machine removes wax gently and effectively.

The water is gently warmed to lukewarm, then squirted into the ear to loosen and remove any wax. Before an appointment, a doctor or nurse will perform an ear examination. If excess wax is found inside the ear, the patient may be offered ear drops to apply for 2 or 3 days. Using warm olive oil before attending a clinic is recommended, though we always recommend consulting with the Broadgate GP team beforehand, as this will depend on the condition of your ears.

Once the drops of oil have been applied and the wax softened, we’ll carry out the ear syringing procedure at our London based clinic. The whole procedure takes only a few short minutes.

Some people with sensitive ears may find the sensation of the procedure slightly uncomfortable, but most people find it somewhat pleasant. The effect of syringing or irrigation can be felt immediately or may take a few seconds.

FAQs About Ear Syringing

Can you have your ears syringed with an ear infection?

One of the most common ways to remove wax in general practice is ear irrigation, or syringing, as it is commonly known. This procedure cannot be carried out if the person has had any ear surgery, has had recent infections, or has a perforated eardrum.

If ear syringing is performed by an experienced clinician, the procedure is unlikely to be painful. The main issue that patients notice is the sound of the suction probe, which is reasonably quick to become accustomed to. We use extra-fine tips for suctioning wax very close to the drum to avoid excessive exposure to suction noise. If you have an infection of the outer ear, the infection itself can be uncomfortable, and ear syringing of the infected ear can be painful. However, ear syringing of infected debris and wax from the external ear is the most effective treatment for an external ear infection (otitis externa), along with antibiotic drop usage if the cause is bacterial. You can help reduce some discomfort by taking your preferred painkiller an hour before your appointment.

In most cases, it takes up to 15 minutes to perform this procedure on both ears. It is very important to remain as still as possible during the procedure. The ear canal is very small and is in very close proximity to the eardrum. Even small movements can put the ear canal image out of focus, prolonging the appointment duration.

There is a range of symptoms which might improve when the ear wax is removed. These include ear ache, hearing loss, tinnitus, itchiness, dizziness and/or ear infections.
