At a sexual health appointment, a doctor asks about your symptoms, recent sexual contact, contraception and medical history. You may be offered a blood test, urine test, swab or examination. If exposure occurred within the last 72 hours, seek urgent advice about HIV post-exposure prophylaxis. Post-exposure prophylaxis, known as PEP, must be started quickly. Do not wait for a routine appointment if post-exposure prophylaxis PEP may be needed.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis, usually called PrEP, may be suitable for eligible people with an ongoing higher risk of HIV. A doctor can discuss your risk and advise where to access PrEP. Hepatitis B testing and vaccinations can also be discussed where relevant.
Sexual health is not limited to testing. You may also want advice about contraception, emergency contraception, pregnancy or family planning.

Emergency contraception works best when accessed promptly. Options include an emergency contraceptive pill or copper coil depending on timing and suitability. Many local pharmacies provide free oral emergency contraception through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, so a local pharmacy may be the fastest option if you cannot attend.
We can also arrange pregnancy testing and discuss referral options if you need confidential advice about continuing a pregnancy or termination.
The doctor will explain the infection, treatment and whether a partner should also be tested. Depending on the condition, you may need antibiotics, antiviral medication or referral to another health clinic.
