Sex Education – How It’s Opened The Conversation About Sex
What do you think of when you think of sex? At Broadgate GP, we think of fun and excitement, but we also know that sex can be weird, embarassing, and down right emotional. While the adult population are acutely aware of the range of emotions that accompany sex, the teenage population aren’t. In the past main stream movies and tv shows have exhibited sex to be simple and completely pleasureable, with focus on losing virginity or unplanned teenage pregnancies. Having watched and studied the hit show, we decided to give you the lowdown on why it is such a popular programme.
Why Does it Get People Watching and Talking?
The show looks outside the box, while there are some aspects of adolescents losing their virginity and unplanned teen pregnancies, the focus on the hit TV show is on how the individual characters can build a caring and mutually fulfilling sexual relationship. Looking at both the physical and emotional connection when it comes to sex, and how communication can have a positive impact.
The hit TV show is fictional but educational too. The show tackles everything that modern day adolescents are faced with; sexual assault, coming out, academic pressures, nonbinary feelings, and general relationships. People like to watch it because it is imaginative, fearless and unique.
Who Can Watch Sex Education on Netflix?
The out of the box approach to the script and the filming of the hite TV show, means that the series appeals to adults of all ages and adolescents alike. From our conversations in the office we know that adults feel for the characters in the show, based on our own experiences. And adolescents who watch it are able to see sexual relationships for the range of emotions that they are in real life.
How Many Series Are There?
There are 3 seasons in total, all following the same characters as they discover the trials tribulations associated with sex, sexual relationships, relationships with friends, sexual feelings and sexuality. Sex Education is a hit TV show that answers questions that teenagers aren’t taught in school and probably helps adults understand how their teenage children are probably feeling too.
What Is The Storyline and Plot Behind Sex Education?
Sex Education is set in a fictional town of Moordale. The show revolves around a male teen called Otis (played by Asa Butterfield). He starts a makeshift sex therapy practice for teenagers, taking after his mum Jean (portrayed by the brilliant Gillian Anderson), who is a real sex therapist. Otis and Jean are the backbone of the show, and along with the rest of the amazing cast have turned Sex Education into one of the most popular, freshest and real shows on the box.
Who Are The Main Characters in Sex Education?
The show is full of amazing and standout characters, with all of them involved and all of their stories followed from the very first episode. Some of the main characters that the show follows are:
- Otis – the very first episode makes it clear that Otis is a virgin, but not only that, he is still working up to trying masturbation
- Maeve – is a sexually active character, and while is comfortable with the fact she is sexually active, her struggles focus on herself belief that is she is worthy of love
- Eric – the best friend of Otis and one of the only gay “out” gay teenagers at the school
- Aimee – one of the popular girls, she is always aiming to please her boyfriend in the show but isn’t sure of her own sexuality
- Jean – Otis mum, and sex therapist to various adults in the show
While there is a range of characters these are the stand out ones who truly make you think and answer questions that need answering.
How Good is it?
Have you ever watched a show that is so good that you binge watch it on a weekend? Yes, even doctors do that! We have watched, cried and laughed, our way through all 3 seasons. While the characters in the hit TV show are certainly interested in sex, the programme also highlights all of the anxieties that indiviauls are faced with when it comes to sex. Whether it is losing your virginity, dealing with an unplanned pregnancy or an STI, the whole range is covered.
