What is Diabetes?
Here at Broadgate GP, we are a private practice based in London and we provide a range of support and treatments for those who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
The most well known type of diabetes is Type 2, Type 2 diabetes occurs when people develop a resistance to the insulin in their body, the insulin won’t work as well anymore and the body will be unable to push the sugar away from the bloodstream and into the cells.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition, it’s where the body will have developed antibodies against the beta cells in the pancreas that aim to supply insulin. This diabetes can come on very intensely. It’s a condition that will require the use of insulin everyday and the daily diet will have to be changed in order to reduce the effects of diabetes.
This type of diabetes, type 1, tends to occur in younger people and type 2 was more prevalent in older people. However things have changed and younger people are now being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This can be down to carbohydrate enriched diets and poor nutrients.
Where diabetes is concerned, there also seems to be a misunderstanding about sugar, people think that it involves the sugar put in tea or coffee or the sugar that’s in biscuits, cakes and chocolate bars. But it also includes less obvious foods like carbohydrates, such as grains and potatoes which convert straight to sugar when in the body.

Why do I need to be treated for Diabetes?
Diabetes can have a big impact on circulation and if it’s left unchecked, in the long run it can cause blindness, kidney problems and losing limbs. High sugar levels have also been linked to dementia. So with all of this in mind, it’s essential that you consider the options should you have been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is reversible, it can be reversed with a lifestyle change, for example focusing on diet, exercise, meditation, relaxation and attention to natural insulin. Diet isn’t the only factor here, stress can encourage diabete, it is tied into the metabolism of insulin, so sometimes, stress can be the cause.
Diabetes Management
Diabetes diagnosis and management is important because it can affect the immune system, by optimising your diet, you are treating potential diabetes as well as optimising the immune system for the body.
The main remedy for diabetes is to manage your diet, further research can be carried out, this will involve checking for autoimmunity, checking for underlying infections, monitoring insulin resistance, sugar levels and long term sugar levels. By trying to rectify these problems, the deficiency in insulin will be reduced.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition, you can ask your GP to test you for other types of autoimmune conditions, such as coeliac disease, thyroid disease and other types of autoimmunity.
If your diabetes is more complex and is associated with other conditions or metabolic problems, an in depth analysis can be carried out on your health, from thyroid problems to hormonal issues.
If you think you may have diabetes, we recommend asking yourself the following questions:
- Do you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes?
