6 Ways to Improve Your Mental Health and Well Being

Selfcare Tips To Boost Your Mental Health

Taking care of your own mental health and wellbeing may seem like a bit of a chore at times.  Individuals across all backgrounds can struggle with their mental health, too! We aren’t saying that you will feel depressed or have feelings on impending doom-but sometimes days might be tough when it comes to our moods; some people’s lives even become more difficult than they would like because someone else is feeling down for whatever reason (whether it’s an illness or just life in general). Mental well being matters as much–if not more!–to us then physical wellness does so here are 6 easy ways to improve yours.

Ways To Improve Your Mental Health

Talk About Your Feelings

Talking about your feelings can be a sign of strength, as well as the best way to stay healthy mentally. It helps you deal with problems when feeling troubled or down and encourages others who might need help doing so too! We offer excellent psychiatry services at Broadgate GP, and while there are many reasons to see a psychiatrist, we encourage all our patients not only talk but also share their thoughts in an open environment where they are free from judgement.

Some people may think that opening up regarding personal matters implies weakness on one’s part; however this couldn’t be further from the truth – being able to discuss how one feels emotions openly will make him/her feel more capable than ever before since it lets off steam by releasing these built-up tensions out loud through conversation.  If you can’t explain how you feel using one word, use as many as you want.  Don’t be scared to tell people how you feel, what you feel like doing and how you feel like acting.

Staying Active Can Improve Your Mood

We know the last thing that you might feel like doing is exercise. But we aren’t telling people to go hit a gym or an actual workout! It’s been proven over time as being linked with improved mental health and having more energy – all things any person would want in their day… plus it just feels good when one has done some type of physical activity on top of feeling refreshed afterwards (and who doesn’t need those?).

Regularly getting outdoors can help release endorphins which give us the chance for happy feelings; these same hormones also increase blood flow due-to increased circulation rates thanks again to our body heat from exercising at higher temperatures. Experts believe that just 30 minutes of exercise a day can improve your mental health, so why not try to lead a more active lifestyle and see how your mental health improves?

Healthy Diet

It is all too easy these days to grab fast food, whether you visit a fast food chain, the local takeaway or order of one of the ever popular delivery sites. However, eating these foods can have a negative effect on your mental health and wellbeing. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that what we eat and drink has an impact on how we feel, for example caffeine can have an effect almost instantly. However, food and fluid intake can also have a long lasting effect on the body physically and mentally. For your brain to stay healthy, it needs lots of nutrients. Don’t forget that a healthy diet is good for both your physical and mental health. Our resident dietician recommends a health balanced diet consisting of:

  • Lots of fruit and vegetables
  • Wholegrain cereals and bread
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Dairy products
  • Plenty of water

If you want help with maintaining a healthy diet don’t hesitate to get in touch with Broadgate GP, we can make you an appointment with our resident dietitian to discuss your needs and requirements.

Watch Your Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol is undoubtedly a great party trick, but it’s not the best way to deal with life’s problems. While at first you may be able to change your mood or forget about tough situations for a while; in some cases consuming alcohol can create more difficulties down the line–especially if there are underlying mental health issues involved!

A shot every now and then won’t hurt anyone—but drinking too much will only make things worse on both physical AND psychological levels. If dealing with stress has been making an appearance recently (or anytime), don’t reach out for that second drink just yet: studies show excessive drinkers often struggle even when they’re sober because their minds have become accustomed over time-and having trouble coping while under pressure takes its toll physically.

Keep In Touch With People

Don’t isolate yourself, it is one thing we hear all the time.  Patients isolating themselves from family and friends.  Isolation often leads to depression, and it’s something that we hear a lot of from patients who isolate themselves from family or friends. A good support network can help you during times of stress- whether they’re your loved ones at home, colleagues with whom you work closely on a daily basis– connecting regularly will be beneficial for everyone involved! Even though catching up might not always be possible due to how busy life has become lately (especially during the Covid 19 pandemic), being in contact through social media platforms as well as phone calls/texting etc., still helps us stay connected without having any face time between each other which is important too. Communicating with others, not necessarily talking about your feelings at this stage, but just chatting and putting the world to rights can be hugely beneficial for your mental health.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask For Help

It’s time to stop thinking of ourselves as heroes.
No matter what your needs are, whether it be help at work or around the house-don’t hesitate! Too many people try and do everything themselves only for themself when really they could use some assistance with their mental health too. If you’re feeling lonely or sad then don’t be afraid anymore because there is always someone who wants nothing more than others happiness; all we need now just ask them out loud without getting scared by how difficult this may sound like “Just talk with somebody” Over ⅓ doctor visits relate directly back into discussions concerning patient wellness

  • Stopping you from getting on with your life
  • Having an impact on the people you live with or family life
  • Having an impact on people you work with
  • Has been affecting your mood for several weeks
