Female Health Screening
In the UK, women are offered a number of female health screenings and it is very important that you always have them on time. These screenings can help to detect conditions such as cervical cancer in their early stages and give you a much greater chance of survival, so it is vital that you remember to go for your screenings and smear tests when they are due.
More than 3,000 people are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year in the UK and while it most commonly occurs in women in their thirties, it is can also affect those in their twenties and younger.
Cervical cancer can be spotted very early on with a cervical smear test, which can detect the abnormal cells that are found during the early stages of cancer. This then allows the patient to be treated, so the abnormal cells can be removed.
Not all abnormal cells are cancerous, but many can develop into cervical cancer if they are not treated and the patient may not know they are ill until the symptoms present themselves and the cancer is in an advanced stage.
In the UK, women between the age of 25 and 49 should have a cervical screening test every three years, whilst women between the ages of 50 and 64 are advised to have the test done every five years.
If you are over the age of 65, you can still go for a cervical screen and it is advised that you do so if you have not been screened for at least 15 years or if you have received abnormal test results in the past.
