Mental Health Symptoms

Diagnosing and treating psychological health issues services is the same for both men and women. Yet, the fact of the matter remains that 28% of men do not seek medical help, as opposed to only 19% of women.

These figures stem from a recent survey that was commissioned by YouGov, as reported on by the Guardian newspaper. The survey was the largest of its kind, taking in over 2,500 people suffering from psychological health problems.

One third of women opened-up to family and/or friends about their mental health problems within one month of them surfacing. Only one quarter of men did the same.

Over one third of men either delayed for over two years or never told close friends and family about their illnesses. This compares to only one quarter of women.

Diagnosing and treating psychological health issues in young men

There is a misconception amongst many men that that to admit to a psychological illness is showing weakness. They mistakenly feel that it is manlier to put-up and shut-up. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The fact of the matter is that it takes courage to admit to having a psychological illness. With suicide being the leading cause of death in young men, the need for openness, and honesty, which enables diagnosis and treatment, has never been greater.

The most common psychological disorders

The most common psychological disorders that we diagnose and treat here at Broadgate GP Clinic London Wall include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression

There are many reasons for both of these conditions developing. Sometimes the cause is some sort of traumatic experience and sometimes it can be something as simple as peer pressure or obesity.

For more information about the causes of anxiety, check-out the anxiety webpage on the MentalHealth.Org,UK website

People often feel alone and ostracised from the rest of society, but treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapies have a high rate of success.
