Botox Priced from £215
Botulinum Toxin (Botox) is a chemical produced by the botulinum bacteria. Muscles in the body become weak and inactive when injected with this protein derivative toxin. This helps to stop the muscles from functioning by blocking neuromuscular transmission – stops the chemical message from the nerve to the muscle.
Since 1978, Botox has been used as a treatment for patients with eye squints by weakening the over active eye muscles. From then on its has been used in a mixture of therapeutic areas such as cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, facial spasm, multiple sclerosis, spasmodic neck, writer’s cramp and tics. In the past decade or so, the use of Botox for cosmetic therapy has become widespread.
How does it work?
When using facial muscles repeatedly throughout a lifetime, the skin is creased in areas of greatest use. As the skin ages, this causes the slow down of collagen and elastin production in the skin as we get older. In other words, the skin becomes damaged and wrinkle lines become permanent. By applying the Botox treatment, the muscles become inactive in these areas which stops creasing, allows recovery and causes the line to soften up or eventually fade away.
This kind of treatment requires frequent handling within the first couple of years to “re-educate” the facial muscles. After that the treatment would become less frequent.
How safe is Botox?
Botox treatment can be harmful in high concentrations/doses. Although surgery which includes only a small dose of Botox, has a high margin of safety and the area which the Botox spreads is about the size of a fingernail around the injection.
What Happens during Treatment?
Procedures can take about 5 to 10 minutes. The practitioner will ask you to move certain muscles on your face to detect how they work and treat which areas you would like to improve. During this time you will be explained the process of the treatment. After the treatment is over, expect slight redness and swelling which will return to normal after a few hours. You will start to feel the effects from the treatment after 4 – 14 days but this might vary depending on the individual. This effect should last 2 and 6 months depending on the individual once again, but at the same time, notice an ability to move your muscles around more comfortably and freely.
Does it Hurt?
Most people describe the treatment as painless as its just a short fine needle injected into the appropriate area. Very similar to an insect bite if you have ever experienced that.
