During the winter, flu is a highly contractable viral infection that affects all ages. In order to control and reduce the number of people affected, a vaccine is produced every year based on the strains the flu virus causes to the general public.
When a person suffers form fever, headaches, aching muscles, chills, cough or other respiratory symptoms, these are the signs of a flu virus coming along.
Why should you have a Flu vaccination?
The Flu virus can be very serious if it's not treated and can lead to serious illness or even death, especially in the very young, the elderly and those with poor immunity. Influenza viruses are also very easily transmitted through close contact with one another, crowded situations, the use of public transport, working environment such as your office and with the general public. People who are over the age of 65 years, medical problems, asthma, emphysema, heart disease, low immunity or even diabetic related people have a higher risk in catching the flu virus.
What is Swine Flu?
The Swine Flu is thought to have originated from pigs and given the name from a specific strain of influenza.
The most common symptoms are a dry cough, diarrhoea, fever, headache, sore throat and feeling generally unwell. In other words, the symptoms are very similar to seasonal flu. Most people recover within a week, even without special treatment, but residual symptoms may last longer.
How can I prevent catching a cold or Flu this winter?
In this day and age, there are no known cures for colds or the flu, so making sure that you don't get the virus is the main goal. Getting the flu vaccination is the most effective way in tackling the flu virus. Below is a list of measures you should take to reduce the the chances of contracting the flu.
Cut alcohol consumption - alcohol dehydrates the body and also affects the liver which is the body’s filtering system, thereby increasing the time it takes to eliminate toxins from your body.
RELAX - taking time out for enjoyment and relaxation stimulates your level of interleukins (leaders in the immune system response against cold and flu viruses).
Watch your nutrition and ensure you are following a healthy diet.
Do regular aerobic exercise to boost your immune system and the body’s natural virus-killing ability.
Eat foods containing phytochemicals: dark green, red and yellow fruits and vegetables contain body boosting vitamins.
Eat yoghurt for the beneficial bacteria which keep the gut healthy and boost the immune system.
DON'T SMOKE! Statistics show smokers get more severe and more frequent colds. Even passive smokers (especially children) are affected.
Wash your hands often.
Avoid touching your face without hand washing as viruses enter the body through the eyes, nose or mouth.
Drink plenty of fluids to flush out toxins and hydrate.
Get fresh air. Central heating dries you, your mucus membranes and makes you more susceptible to cold and flu viruses.
